Scattergories

For those who want a game that is fast and creative, Scattergories is ideal for this group of people.  The challenge of this fast-paced game is having to think fast and to come up with answers that the opponents would probably not think of, but think fast because there is a three minute time limit on each round before having to put the pencil down and compare answers.

Topics and How to Play

Everyone learned their A, B, Cs, plants, animals, and minerals, states, cities, and countries, birds, reptiles, fish, stars, planets, and – well the possibilities are endless of the topics that can be on the Scattergories topic cards.  The player rolls the 20 sided dice with the alphabet on it, to determine the letter that is to be used.  The topic card provides the category and players have to think of things in that category all starting with the same letter of the alphabet, and if the player can think of a word/words that start with the same double letters, they score double points.

An example of the topics may be countries that start with the letter “I” – the players must write down all the cities they can think of that start with the letter “I” (take three minutes and see how difficult that is to come up with as many as possible) in two and one half minutes.  Examples could be Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Indonesia, India, Iran, Ivory Coast, and Iraq.  But those are easy topics, how about naming as many types of fish that start with the letter “S” – see, it’s really much harder than it initially sounds.

Players will rack their brains trying to think of just one more answer to beat their opponent.  Of course duplicate answers are thrown out on all cards, so the player at the end of the third round that has the most non-duplicated answers wins the game.

The host might want to keep a dictionary handy just to look up the “questionable” words that some players may just make up.  Players can also challenge words that may not actually be a word that fits the category, such as including Indiana as a country when it’s actually a state.

Players will circle all the answers on the list that are not duplicated by other players or challenged as either not a real word or an incorrect category.  Then play rounds two and three with different categories and letters.  The total of non-duplicated answers throughout all three sheets for the player wins.  Another rule, players can’t use the same answer in two rounds, such as Rose for a color or for a flower in the same round.

Think Fast

Scattergories is one of those game where the players have to write fast, and think even faster.  This is a great way to get the brain cells thinking fast and trying to come up with answers the opponents don’t write down.  If the scores are tied, a playoff round has to be played, but that just extends the fun.
